10 ways to de-stress the mind and relax

This month marked National Stress Awareness Day, and in our busy twenty-first century lives, it’s needed! Often we rush from one activity to another, school run to work, to food prep, to gym… if you can muster enough energy. It begs the question, when do we find time to de-stress without taking the whole day to visit a spa?!

I have some good news. There are some very simple things you can do in your daily life to manage your stress levels and realign your mind. And no – they don’t involve going to the spa!

1.     Practice mindfulness

You may have heard of mindfulness, but aren’t exactly sure what it is. Being ‘mindful’ is all about being in the moment and acutely appreciating where you are and what you’re doing. There are many ways to practice mindfulness, but simply closing your eyes and breathing deeply can help combat stress. Exhale and focus simply on where you are in that exact moment.

2.     Read a book

Escaping into another world and distracting the mind through words is another great way to relax. Delving into a fictional story or a book teaching a lesson can be a great way to escape the stresses of day-to-day life.

3.     Take a short walk for fresh air

Getting a blast of fresh air and walking around the block can be enough to banish some tension and allow you to continue with your tasks. Great quick fix during a busy day!

4.     Listen to relaxing music

Many spas will have a relaxation room, where you can lie back and listen to the soothing notes of relaxing music. Why not try this at home? Just dim the lights, light a candle and close your eyes.

5.     Have a herbal tea

Green and mint teas are both brilliant options for a calming hot drink. Try to avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee and tea. These will likely have the opposite effect when trying to promote relaxation!

6.     Explore meditation

Meditation and mindfulness are sometimes referred to together – but they are actually different things. Meditation has deep-set cultural and religious roots and is fascinating to learn. Why not start with having a read of this ancient relaxation technique?

7.     Write out 5 things you’re grateful for

Remembering what you’re grateful for is a brilliant way to remind yourself of your purpose and path in life. Do this everyday to boost the positivity in your day.

8.     Exercise

You’ve heard it before – exercise releases endorphins and endorphins make you happy!

9.     Turn off your social media

Turning off your social media channels can give you time to breathe, remember what you need to do and switch off from the buzz of everybody else’s lives. Don’t compare yourself to others, just focus on yourself. Turning off your smartphone can be the best way to do this.

10.    Give someone you love a hug

You know this will help – I don’t need to explain why!
